We're a credit union, not a bank
What does that mean? North County CU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. Your $5 opening deposit in our Membership Savings Account buys you one share in the credit union - that makes you an equal owner of this financial institution.
We've been a cooperative since 1954.
We have different goals
As a member who owns one share of our cooperative, you have one vote to elect our volunteer Board of Directors. The Board works closely with our Senior Management Team to set the course of the credit union and serve as the voice of the membership.
Board members are volunteers, meaning they don't get paid and their decisions are guided by what's best for our membership. The money we earn goes back to our members (people like you), not into the pockets of stockholders like at a bank.
Members in good standing who are over 18 years of age are eligible to serve on our Board. Elections are held once a year and all members are invited to participate in the election and nomination process.
Many members of credit unions like knowing their savings will go back into the community and help other members get mortgages to buy homes and loans for new cars. They help members grow their savings, pay off debt, and plan for the future.
We'll save you money
As a not-for-profit cooperative, we're always looking for ways to save you money any way we can. North County CU representatives are rewarded for finding you the best deal - not on making record profits.
In general, credit unions offer higher savings rates, meaning that your money grows faster, and lower rates on loans, meaning that you will owe less over the lifetime of the loan. Credit unions also tend to charge less in fees.
Datatrac, a financial research and technology firm, regularly provides the National Credit Union Association with credit union and bank interest rate comparisons - as they say, proof is in the numbers!
A safe place for your money
